TIL strives to utilise and facilitate the recycling of construction items within the breadth of projects we undertake. These include a commitment to not only recycle asphalt, concrete, timber, paper, cardboard and plastics. But to support the maintenance of construction items such as boxing timber so that reuse is possible.
Asphalt and concrete are separated at the company’s yard and taken to recycling plants for crushing. Accessways, haul roads, base course and asphalt aggregates are reused in making asphalt. Asphalt millings are used for haul road and temporary backfilling for accessways.
This commitment extends from project sites to our office where we have recently implemented paperless accounting software, and bulk buy eliminating paper waste and excess packaging.
The whole company takes responsibility in playing their part to reduce carbon emissions.
This is enabled through our strict policy for fuel usage by all plants and equipment. In addition, the use of our vehicles are monitored by the ERoad system to increase efficiency and minimise fuel wastage and air pollution. Water and power usage are monitored monthly – to control wastage, and this is discussed in company toolbox meetings. Yard and office lights are switched off when not required, automated switches installed.
We use a number of strategies prior to construction to avoid carbon emissions
- Vehicle travelling routes are evaluated to minimise the truck travel times and millage travelling routes are fixed and circulated to all drivers.
- Careful consideration is given to tipping sites, recycling options, aggregate usage and cartage.
- Excavators and truck size are chosen carefully to avoid using larger units than is required, fit for purpose. (EV vehicles are currently under consideration)
